Letter from SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS to JAMES BARRY, written 31 January 1786, at London

The letter is signed 'JR ', Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92), President of the Royal Academy, but is written in the hand of the Secretary F.W.Newton (1720-94).

Barry, elected Professor of Painting on 4 March 1782, was required by the constitution of the Royal Academy to give six lectures a year.1

I communicated to the President & Council your Intention of reading the your fourth Lecture on Monday next 2 & your 5th on the Monday follgfollowing -

I am ordered to inform you that as there is not now time for giving your six Lectures compleat3 - the Council are of opinionthe Council are of opinionthat your lectures be postponed till next year & that they begin on on the first Monday after the Xmas Hollydays4
